Woodburn Circle Society
The Woodburn Circle Society is the West Virginia University Foundation’s most prestigious
recognition society comprised of four levels: Monticola, Woodburn, Martin and Chitwood.
The Society recognizes living donors who have made cumulative gifts or pledges
from July 1-June 30 of $250,000 or more to benefit the University and its affiliated
organizations.
The gift commitment may be satisfied through any combination of the following:
- Outright gifts from an individual of cash, securities, real property or gifts-in-kind, also gifts from an individual’s wholly owned company, family foundation, donor advised fund or other giving entity
- Corporate matching gifts
- Irrevocable income-producing gifts (unitrust, annuity trust, gift annuity or deferred gift annuity)
- Life insurance policy gifts (where WVUF is the owner), and real estate remainder gifts (with a retained life estates for the donors)
- Bequests, testamentary retirement asset gifts, “payable on death” accounts and beneficiary designations of life insurance.
Four recognition levels exist within the Society based on the member’s giving:
- Gifts of $5 million or more - Monticola
- Gifts of $1 million to $4,999,999 – Woodburn
- Gifts of $500,000 to $999,999 – Martin
- Gifts of $250,000 to $499,999 – Chitwood
