WVU Medicine Children’s marked a construction milestone as the final steel beam was placed for its new hospital, thanks to generous donor support throughout the 2019-’20 fiscal year.
More than $52 million has been raised to date for the “Grow Children’s” capital campaign, which seeks to raise $60 million in private support for the state-of-the-art facility and associated program improvements.
Significant gifts or pledges made in 2019-’20 include:
- A leadership-level gift from Karen & Jerry West, a basketball legend at WVU and for the LA Lakers.
- A $1 million gift from Mike and JoAnn Ross and family to WVU Medicine Children’s and the Brick Health Outreach Fund at the WVU School of Medicine.
- A $70,000 donation toward a $500,000 pledge to name the cafeteria for the Mountain Loggers Group, Inc.
- A $1 million Day of Giving contribution from United Bank to support family-friendly facilities adjacent to the main lobby and welcome center, including a gift shop, pharmacy and lounge area.
- A $1 million gift from the Milan Puskar Foundation, in memory of one of WVU’s most prolific benefactors.
- A $100,000 gift from retired WVU-trained radiologist Dr. John Mikita and his wife, Linda, to support a general radiology room.
- A $100,000 tribute gift from Drs. D. Raymond and Deborah Knapp, pediatric specialists who both graduated from WVU.
- A grassroots effort by the United Mine Workers of America to donate $1 million in honor of longtime President and West Virginia native Cecil E. Roberts.
The 150-bed, nine-story hospital is under construction next to WVU Medicine J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, which houses existing WVU Medicine Children’s services on its sixth floor.
