Logan County nurse builds access to care with WVU School of Nursing training

Keri Workman

Keri Workman, a registered nurse (RN) based in Logan County, is making a significant impact in her community by building nurse-led access to care points.

Workman recently completed the  Foundations of Faith Community Nursing training program offered by the  WVU School of Nursing through the Westberg Institute.

Through her training, she is not only addressing the health needs of her church congregation, but she is also extending care to surrounding communities.

“It is important to me to ensure more people have access to vital healthcare services,” Workman said.

Her training was made possible through funds provided by the Pallottine Foundation of Huntington, which supports initiatives aimed at improving community health. With her new FCN certification, Workman is ready to conduct health screenings, offer health education, and provide other essential services that will help improve the overall well-being of those in her community.

"Nurses are trusted members of their communities,” said Dr.  Angel Smothers, Associate Dean for Community Engagement at the WVU School of Nursing. “Building these nurse-led access to care points across West Virginia is providing an additional way for community members to engage with nurses to improve their health-related outcomes."

The Foundations of Faith Community Nursing course equips nurses with the skills and knowledge needed to integrate their clinical expertise with spiritual care, creating a holistic approach to health and wellness in their communities. As Workman is illustrating in Logan County, Faith Community Nurses can play a major role in improving the lives of their community members by bridging gaps in healthcare access, especially for individuals in rural areas.

Donations supporting the work of Faith Community Nurses are awarded via the  WVU Foundation, the nonprofit organization that receives and administers private donations on behalf of the University.
