“I’m fortunate to have this opportunity, I plan to give back to the people of West Virginia and the University as my thanks and duty for this tremendous honor.”

Wheeling, West Virginia, native Luke Tiu has always been drawn to both science and law, a combination that led him to pursue a biology degree, with a minor in law and legal studies, at West Virginia University.

Growing up a dedicated Mountaineer fan, choosing WVU felt natural.

“I was born in Morgantown on a football Saturday,” Tiu said.

Receiving the Foundation Scholarship was an added honor that solidified his decision.

Tiu is one of the 2025 WVU Foundation Scholars, a distinction that includes a $4,5000 travel stipend. He hopes to use it to study abroad in a place where he can learn about international advancements in science and technology, experience he believes will prepare him for a future career in patent law.

“I’ve always loved the life sciences, but I also enjoy reading, debating, and exploring legal issues,” Tiu said. “Patent law allows me to bring those passions together.”

During his first year, Tiu immersed himself in campus opportunities, from joining the WVU Pre-Law Society to connecting with faculty and fellow scholars. He values the diverse viewpoints he has encountered in his classes and the early access to the University’s extensive academic and professional network.

He hopes to begin undergraduate research next year, study abroad as a junior, and complete a legal internship before graduating in 2029. Ultimately, he aims to help bring medical innovations to market and make a meaningful impact through science, law, and public service.

Grateful for the support he’s received, Tiu views the scholarship as both a privilege and a responsibility.

“I’m fortunate to have this opportunity,” he said. “I plan to give back to the people of West Virginia and the University as my thanks and duty for this tremendous honor.”
